Artist's statement:
They say time is the ultimate currency. I believe them.
Little infuriates me more than the gross systemic inequality that exists within the American and global economies. It’s shocking that anyone defends the notion that one hour’s labor of an executive should be valued at hundreds to thousands of hours of a physical laborer.
These works began as an inane boycott with a Dadaist flair. Counted Circles are an intentional waste of time in meaningless tedium. Yet it is precisely the inherent respect we share for time that assigns value to them. And while the drawing of circles is mindless in intent, the meditative state evoked in such repetition becomes a personal exercise in mindfulness.
The forthcoming Portraits of Prayer are political statements on the current futility of being an American in the current era of political stagnation in the face of pleas by public majorities.
